The
Construction Process of Creating Ghillie Suits
Ghillie
suits are used by hunters in very different circumstances.
Some use ghillie suits for combative or defensive purposes, while others
use the suits for hunting sports or even paintball.
When it comes to constructing ghillie suits you will find both
professionally manufactured suits as well as amateur suits, built with a
purpose. For the most part, amateur
ghillie suits are constructed by members of the military or by local law
enforcement. Why? Because
they will have to create a ghillie suit based on their immediate surroundings in
a very short span of time.
Military
personnel (i.e. snipers who must be camouflaged very well) may wear a base
uniform, such as a flight suit, and merely cover the top piece with burlap flaps
or jute twine. Commercial
manufacturers use a similar process but spend more time perfecting these
products, sewing and gluing the pieces together.
Synthetic suits are also popular as the design allows for a lightweight
construction.
Once
the process of sewing ghillie suits is completed, then additions can be added.
Military personnel may add real twigs and leaves to their costume, as the
most convincing foliage out in the woods will be the real thing.
However, the disadvantage of using real foliage is that it will have to
be changed every few hours. Otherwise,
the pieces will wilt. Some hunters
may even try to “earthen up” their suits by dragging them behind a vehicle,
soaking it in mud or even applying manure to the outfit.
Military personnel is used to doing this because they don’t pay much
for their suits. However, hunters
and paintballers usually pay an average of $100.00 for quality ghillie suits and
so look for alternatives to trashing their favorite new apparel.
